Open for Business

It’s safe to say that the past few months haven’t exactly been “business as usual.”

As Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, and Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, noted in a joint statement on July 20, 2020, COVID-19 has placed an “additional economic burden” on many people in British Columbia (and, indeed, across Canada). It’s a burden that’s individuals, businesses, and organizations share.

Restarting the Economy

We’ve pulled together and worked hard to “flatten the curve”. As a result, we are now in Phase 3 of B.C.’s Restart Plan. We’re seeing some businesses and organizations reopen their doors, and more people going out to visit those locations. But along with the optimism this brings, there’s still a sense of uncertainty.

“On the outside it looks like there are calm waters ahead, that we as a business made it through the storm—but when you look at the hull of the boat under the water, there is major damage,” Christine, from Stonehouse Teas, said. “Behind the scenes business owners are desperately trying to patch, repair, and bail out the boat to float another day. The customers and even staff may not see this damage, but it is there.”

That’s something to keep in mind when choosing where to shop. As we move ahead with restarting B.C., it’s a good time to think about ways to restart the local economy – and keep it running.

Why Shop Locally?

When you buy a product or service from a local provider, you’re helping your favourite coffee roaster or independent retailer keep their doors open; you’re helping a graphic designer pay their bills; you’re helping a franchise owner meet their franchise agreement. You’re creating a vibrant local economy. That’s good for you, good for businesses, and good for the community!

Wondering Where to Start?

Whether you’re a business owner or a consumer, we have some ideas to help you support local businesses in the coming weeks—and beyond.

·         Consider participating in The Big Spend event by making a purchase at a local small business this Saturday, July 25.

·         Shop locally online or by phone. Many area businesses have pivoted to offer online shopping, or take orders for free curbside pickup or delivery.

·         Purchase a gift certificate for a B.C. business at Support Local BC. Business owners—you can also register your business to participate.

·        Find and support local producers, growers, and restaurants at Island Good or Buy BC.

Don’t forget to stay safe and maintain an appropriate social distance while you’re out and about shopping locally.

We’ll see you on Saturday for The Big Spend!
