Spotlight on EarWorm Sound
It’s Small Business Week (Oct. 17-23), a national celebration that shines the spotlight on Canadian entrepreneurs and all they contribute to our economies and communities. Throughout the week, we’ve been sharing stories of some of Campbell River’s entrepreneurs and businesses.
Today, we’re getting to know . . . .
Matt Gionet grew up in Campbell River. He started working in the sound editing industry after graduating from college in Vancouver. Matt enjoyed working as a studio operations manager and overseeing the sound-editing work, but was interested in becoming a hands-on editor.
“It was my Mom who suggested I continue sound design in Campbell River,” Matt recalls.
In addition to his mother’s encouragement, Matt says that Vancouver Island North Film Commission was influential in convincing him that Campbell River was somewhere he could pursue his passion. With support from Community Futures Strathcona, Matt launched EarWorm Sound from his mother’s dining room table in 2011. Matt has since grown EarWorm Sound into an award-winning company with clients such as APTN, The Nature of Things and Telus.
In 2017, EarWorm Sound won a coveted Leo Award for Best Sound from the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia, for its work on the APTN show Coyote Science. Matt recognizes that getting this type of attention is good for all entrepreneurs in Campbell River.
“It’s really helped to expand our network of contacts and shows people around the province that we do good work, and that reflects well on the business opportunities in Campbell River.”
